Browns GM Andrew Berry answers truly to why Cleveland signed Jameis Winston over Joe Flacco
Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

With how the 2023 season went, it was a surprise to some how the Cleveland Browns went about the backup quarterback position in free agency.

Cleveland opted to sign veteran QB Jameis Winston, over QB Joe Flacco, who has just helped them get into the playoffs and averaged north of 300 yards passing amidst a 4-1 record down the end of the 2023 regular season.

Flacco went on to sign with the Indianapolis Colts in free agency and will make up to around the same amount as Winston, which is north of $8 million.

Browns GM Andrew Berry appeared on 92.3 The Fan and explained some thoughts about why the Browns went with Winston over Flacco.

"We don't really overact overreact to any individual performance," Berry said on The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima. “If that was the case, then we would we would throw out our entire defense, just because we didn't put our best foot forward. So we wouldn't overreact, Joe played really great football for us last year."

Winston is 30 years old compared to Flacco at age 39. That was just one thing that the Browns looked at in the signing.

"We've taken everything into account. Performance, age, cost, you know, all those things come into play. I think I think you know Joe's an excellent quarterback, Jameis is an excellent quarterback. Jameis made the most sense for us in the in midst of all the roster moves we made this offseason."

If all goes to plan for the Browns, it won’t matter who the backup quarterback is and Deshaun Watson will play his first full season with the team in year No. 3. With the trade between the Browns and Texans officially over, there would be no better time for that to happen.
